Sunday Morning Paddle with Justine Curgenven
Get your Sunday morning started with Olympic Peninsula Paddlers, the Pt Angeles kayak club, as we paddle and explore the sights of the Pt Angeles Harbor. This 4 to 5 mile paddle will leave from Hollywood Beach and provide a great opportunity to try out a newly purchased boat or arrange for a longer test drive off the demo beach. Paddlers are welcome to use their own boats as well. A Beach/Festival pass as well as basic kayak skills are required to participate. The harbor with Pt Angeles and the Olympic Mountains in the backdrop is a lovely place to explore…full of seals, invertebrates and sights. This is a great opportunity to get to know and connect with Justine Curgenven and some of the local paddling community.

New Course! Advanced Rescues
This class will focus on solo rescues as well as group rescues and how best to streamline each with efficiency and practice. Rescues covered in the course include: Reenter and Roll, Cowboy, Hop n Drop, and T Rescues. You will learn about common mistakes, along with group and post rescue do’s and don’ts. Prepare to get wet and be in the water, we will laugh, play, swim and learn together.
Drysuit with insulation and kayak with built in flotation is required.

– Join award winning filmmaker and adventurer, Justine Curgenven in learning some of the tips and tricks of shooting action video. This seminar will be taught on land and cover the essentials for successful kayak based videography. Justine say’s this course could run for a whole day or the entire weekend, nonetheless she has had extensive experience filming her expeditions all across the world. She has produced several action sea kayak and instructional videos including the “This Is The Sea” series, “This Is The Roll” and “Kayaking the Aleutians.” Just how does one go about making an action kayak film? Join award winning filmmaker and professional photographer John Gussman in learning some of the tips and tricks of Kayak Photography. This course will be taught on land and cover the essentials for successful kayak based photography, including equipment, how to pack, how to protect your equipment, best kayaks and useful accessories. You will learn techniques for shooting both from your kayak and simply how your kayak can get you to those “secret” beaches for unique shots. John has been a professional outdoor photographer for years and will get you going on the right track, taking your photography to a whole new level. Course fee $20

Hop into this course and learn the ins and outs of fishing kayaks- learn about the different styles, rigging advancements, seating and even standing arrangements. Let’s face it, people are catching a lot of fish off kayaks; they get into zones motor boats cannot access and have the whole place to themselves. Kayaks are quiet, do not require licensing nor gas and have minimal upkeep- what’s not to love!

SURFSKI PADDLING WITH KENNY HOWELL: A FITNESS KAYAKING SESSION
The surfski is the fastest, most exciting paddlecraft on the water! Discover why these versatile kayaks are gaining popularity worldwide. Surfskis are fun to paddle on calm water as well as the open ocean. It’s good for you, too! They are very fast, very safe (sit-on-top and self-bailing), lightweight (about 30 lbs), and incredibly maneuverable with a foot-operated rudder. In this introductory session, we provide stable models from to teach the essential skills such as body posture, use of the wing paddle, and remounting the surfki in open water. Course fee- $35.00

Learn The Kayak Roll
Learn strategies and insights on how to roll your kayak, these techniques are applicable to both sea and river kayakers. Once you learn this valuable skill, your confidence will soar. Intro To Surf Zone
This clinic is designed to improve boat handling skills necessary in the surf, and introduce landing techniques for a variety of environments. Learn how adjustments to basic strokes, trim, and edging can increase control in the surf. Learn the differences between surfing a sea kayak versus a surf specific boat, discuss safety issues, and have fun in the surf. This clinic is open to sea and river kayakers with their own equipment; kayak with flotation, wetsuit/drysuit, helmet, sprayskirt, paddle, and PFD. Towing Techniques and Scenarios
This class is designed to help make group paddling safer through the knowledge and use of towing techniques. There will be two instructors, lots of tangled lines and laughter, and some very happy folks getting towed to safety. Everyone should have their own tow ropes- even if they are brand new. Yes, things can go wrong on those days when you planned a simple day paddle. Learn how to quickly change a situation so it does not go from bad to worse. This course will teach you how to deal with a number of scenarios that can happen while you are on a paddle, learn to be preventative and act accordingly when an issue does arise. Kayak Repair Made Easy

Basic Paddle Strokes
Would you like to improve the way you turn your kayak or improve the efficiency of your forward stroke? Les & Diane will show you how to better control your boat using your paddle and your body in ways that will almost certainly help you become a more skilled sea kayaker. Subjects to be covered include turning strokes, edging, body positioning, paddle control, linked strokes, braces and rudders. Participants should come dressed for possible immersion, have done at least one wet exit and have minimal basic paddling experience (at least 10 total hours in a sea kayak on flat water). Come prepared to engage and improve! Cost is $35, class size is limited to 8 participants.

Cold Water Immersion
If you only can take one off- water course over the weekend, make it this one; it just might save a life! Join Dr. Sam Baker in learning about the elements involved in cold water immersion. He will cover the following: the four phases of cold water immersion including hypothermia, prevention, water to do in the water, and field treatment- this information may mean the difference between survival vs. death.
We feel this course is incredibly important and are offering it for only $5.00!

Online Registration is highly recommended! Register online here. All class participants must check-in at the Registration Tent at least one hour before your selected course. The Registration Tent is located at the Red Lion Hotel adjacent to Hollywood Beach, and is open from 8 AM on both Saturday April 23rd and Sunday April 24th. You can also pre-check in on Friday April 22nd from 5 PM- 7 PM at BarHop Brewing, two blocks west of Hollywood Beach on Railroad Avenue.
